Une famille de petits commerçants chinois veut désespérément quitter Hong Kong avant son rattachement à la Chine en 1997. Ils tentent, mais en vain, d'émigrer au Canada. Un volcanologue d’origine chinoise, habitant l'Islande depuis quelques années, les invite à le rejoindre sur son île. Une correspondance et une relation toute particulière s’établissent entre lui et l’aînée de la famille.
